At my next company, I’m going to build a game mechanic into everything that doesn’t require creative thinking. You should be able to get points for going to the gym and eating well and those points should correspond to increased subsidies for your health insurance or gym.

Completing a W2 or a direct deposit form would definitely apply.

You could bleed it into some coding tasks as well. Linting code, adding appropriate amounts of documentation, writing complete unit tests, etc. are all mechanical relative to the functionality you’re creating. You should get points for doing the boring but important dirty work.

I wouldn’t put any mechanics around some things that currently are incentivized, like referral bonuses. I think picking the best people is a creative process that doesn’t respond well to getting cash on hiring. You should get cash on saying “no hire” too, if we really wanted to make the right incentive.
